Donald Trump, a former television host and real-estate businessman, has beaten Hillary Clinton in the quest for the presidency, to become the 45th president of the United States. Clinton had a higher share of the popular vote than Trump, however states like Florida, Ohio and North Carolina sided with the Republican; Trump even took Pennsylvania, which had not backed a Republican for president since 1988. It seems the USA’s new president will certainly change the world; but for the better, perhaps not. Trump’s refusal to publicise his tax returns, and his admission that he did not pay federal income taxes for years, will follow him to the Oval Office. An openly racist, homophobic, sexist bigot has been allowed to take the reins of one of the most powerful countries in the world. So why did Donald Trump win? Was it simply the weakness of the opposition, his fear-mongering campaign, or his charismatic character? He is set to take the oath of office on the 20th of January 2017.
