The recently elected President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has faced accusations of being a fascist dictator by many politicians and political commentators over the last few days. Only a week into his presidency, Trump has caused global controversy and outrage with his latest executive order that places a 90 day visa ban on all immigrants and refugees from a list of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The ban restricts entry to citizens from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. In response to this, there have been ongoing protests carried out in the United States and United Kingdom to demonstrate firm opposition and pleads for this executive order to be reversed. The phrase and hashtag ‘Muslim ban’ has been trending all over social media and critics have labelled it as a de-facto ban on Muslims, which is very similar to the proposal he made during his election campaign. His executive order has been accused of specifically targeting a religion and group of people, which has led to comparisons of 1930s dictators such as Hitler and Mussolini. However, supporters of Trump have defended his stance on immigration with claims that his administration has been democratically elected to act in the best interest of national security and protect Americans from the dangers of Islamic terrorism. Is it fair to make the claim, based on this recent executive order, that President Trump is a 21st century Western dictator?
