With the disclosure of David Cameron’s resignation Honours list by a British newspaper, the entire Honours system has come under intense fire. Cameron’s extensive list calls into question whether the Honours system has any honour at all, with many calling it a way to repay favours rather than reward hard-working members of government. A significant number of MPs’ are now calling for a reformation of the Honours system. However, Theresa May has said she will not intervene in David Cameron’s resignation Honours list as she claimed it would ‘set a very bad precedent’. Should the honours system be reformed? Or should it be accepted, merely as another cog of the political engine- in which loyalty and support are purchasable commodities.
